When buying a motorhome or caravan, a whole world of accessories and equipment is open to us. At the top of the list there should be a way to roof the space in front of the entrance. An awning or a vestibule is the perfect solution to enlarge the space. This is where life goes on during a stop - here we eat, prepare meals, rest and integrate with family or friends. We also don't have to worry about wind, rainfall or sun exposure.

Awning - not only in a motorhome

Regardless of what type of caravanning we do, we can choose an awning, which has undeniable advantages - it decomposes quickly, gives us shade or protects against rain: link

When choosing an awning for your vehicle, remember to verify whether it will be attached to the roof or to the wall (appropriate adapters may be required) and choose the length accordingly. If weight is of secondary importance, it is worth choosing a model as long as possible with additional reinforcements and arm locks (eg Thule Omnistor 9200). Basically, the awning should reach a minimum of 15-20 cm behind the open door of the motorhome / caravan) to avoid "jamming" and flooding during rain. The advantage of the awning is also the fact that it is a permanent structural element of the vehicle and does not require space in the cargo space for transport . Although awnings are mainly used for motorhomes, caravan owners who travel mainly in summer in warm countries and stay briefly in various places will also appreciate the advantages of this solution. Another advantage is the fact that the permanently attached awning does not change the center of gravity of the caravan.

Sun protection or rainfall protection panels / walls are available for most types of awnings. They are usually system sheets fastened with keder or Velcro. Properly selected walls will allow us to create a fully functional vestibule: link

However, awning users need to be aware of a few important things. Remember to always use straps or retract the awning when we go for a longer tour or park for a long time. In case of strong wind, it may behave like a sail, which may have unpleasant consequences. The aluminum structure is not armored, and a broken awning and a battered motorhome or caravan are a nightmare that definitely nobody wants to experience on vacation. It is also important to remember that the awning must be properly stretched and tilted on one of the supports during rain so that rainwater does not collect on its surface. One last important note - we definitely do not recommend the awning to fans of winter caravanning.

Vestibule - luxury and space

Especially for caravan owners, it is difficult to imagine trips without a tent called a vestibule. This is where family and social life take place, regardless of the weather, and it is here that all equipment and accessories are stored. Modern awnings are not only light and easy to assemble, but they can also be joined by the so-called Side "annexes" and thus conjure up an additional bedroom, eg for teenagers who do not want to sleep with their parents in a trailer, or a field kitchen or a garage for bicycles and toys. A perfect example of such a model is the inflatable Cirrus North: link

We do not have a frame here, but an inflatable supporting structure - such a scaffolding is stable and rigid, and pumping is done in a simple and quick way with a single valve.

Traditional rack awnings have also undergone a revolution in recent years. The materials they are made of perfectly regulate the indoor climate (breathable membrane), and the frames are light and rigid. The standard construction depths of 2.5 - 3 m also provide a lot of space: link

Fans of winter caravanning can also choose a dedicated solution tailored to their needs: link

The design allows the snow cover to slide smoothly, and the opening / closing and ventilation system facilitates operation even in extreme conditions.

Finally, it is worth mentioning a very important aspect, which is the proper mounting and securing of awnings and awnings - the above-mentioned belts are indispensable equipment for every caravanning enthusiast: link

A great alternative to standard pegs, especially in difficult terrain, are the innovative Peggy Peg mounts, which, when properly anchored with a screwdriver, will prevent the vestibule / awning structure from moving: link
