Airstream from Derby

The American Dream - Made in Derby

Charles Hanson loves unusual beautiful items and when they have a connection with his home town he gets even more excited - he was recently asked to inspect an item which left him totally speechless - a rare occurrence!

The Jordan Airdream is an eight foot long mini caravan which is an homage to the classic American Airstream silver coloured vans from the 1950s. The Airdream has been made in Derby - the home of the most respected engineering company in the world, Rolls Royce - by award winning model engineer, Barry Jordan. Built over a period of 18 months beginning in 2011, the caravan is based on a double motorcycle trailer chassis, with the marine ply body clad with polished aluminium panels. Barry insists that the finish is of aircraft quality with fourteen hundred meticulously positioned pot rivets.

Inside it opens up like a Tardis with a wonderfully imaginative use of space. Features include a fold away double bed, table, television and wash basin, whilst outside is a double hob galley and awning.

As a boy, Barry Jordan had a passion for making models, which he reinforced at the beginning of his engineering career with an apprenticeship at the world renowned Rolls Royce site in Derby. Subsequently moving on to set up a precision testing component company, whilst the company flourished, unfortunately Barry was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour, and in 1994,fearing the worst, he sold his company to Rolls Royce & Associates, a fitting tribute to, as his peers regard him, an ‘absolutely fabulous’ engineer.

But never a man to let the grass grow under his feet, as he was recuperating from treatment, Barry channelled his energies, and returned to his old love of model making. And twenty years on, the tumour having responded well to medication, Barry has travelled the world with his creations, and as ‘a prolific award winner at shows within the field’, he is recognised as one of the finest model engineers of his generation.

This work of art, only one in the world and already raising interest in Europe and America, this head turning but immensely practical caravan is to be auctioned by Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers Ltd of Heage Lane, Etwall, Derbyshire, at 12 noon on Saturday 24th May.
