If you want to see how much Europe differs from America, just take look at this car. What seems quite plain in comparison to other camping vehicles from the United States, would look pretty shocking on a Polish campsite….
The manufacturer, Thor Motor Coach, claims that ACE EVO is a compromise between an A-class camping vehicle (for example, in the size of a small bus) and C-class vehicle (an expanded van). This compromise is 8-10 meters long (depending on version)and by no means can be compared e.g. with a camping vehicle based on Fiat Ducato. But this is America - here the word "standard" and "compromise" have a clearly different meaning than in Europe.
Thanks to its "humble" dimensions, ACE drives as easy as van, but the comfort it offers can be compared with the capabilities of much larger vehicles. In the basic version ACE EVO costs about 89,000 USD, what makes it cheaper than other American vehicles included in the A-Class.
A TV and a double shower
Because it's "an American", we get a 24-inch LCD TV with the installation for the reception of terrestrial and satellite TV in the standard. From a European point of view, however, it’s not the most important.
We’ll certainly appreciate a quite spacious toilet and a shower with large shower tray, which can be placed either in the bathroom or outside it. If we want to, we can connect the shower even outside, enjoying the streams of cool water on a hot day.
A kitchen top and gas stove in some versions almost surround us, thanks to which we’ll have an easy access to everything we need while cooking. An obvious thing is that the standard equipment includes such appliances as a fridge with double doors and a microwave.
Compartments even in the front steps
The interior looks classic and the amount of kitsch found in it can be considered moderate. The furniture in cherry wood or hazelnuts color, handles of brushed nickel and vinyl flooring resembling stone tiles can appeal to everyone.
But the most important are practical advantages. The compartments are everywhere - even in the front steps! Right at the entrance there’s a double wardrobe for... coats and broom (according to the manufacturer).
In front of the passenger’s seat there’s a compartment with 110 V and 12 V sockets. It’s large enough to fit in phones, tablets and other small devices with cables. The manufacturer thought even about animals – there’s a sliding-out drawer for an animal food under the shower.
Most of the devices were placed under the floor, which reduces the noise and temperature inside the vehicle (the tests show, however, that the car even though is loud while driving).
An amazing capacity
Over the driver’s and passenger’s seats there’s a fold-down bed, lowered electrically. There’s also a leather, fold-out sofa. Nonetheless, the most convenient is the king size bed in the size of 1,8 x1,9 m.
Speaking of the sizes ... From the European point of view, particularly noteworthy are huge containers . The fresh water container has a capacity of 189 liters (50 gallons), while the gray water container- 151 liters (40 gallons). The fuel tank is nearly a bottomless pit- it can contain even 300 liters of petrol (80 gallons)!
A classic Ford…running on LPG
The basis for the ACE is a Ford truck (of course , the U.S. version ), powered by petrol and LPG. Wheelbase of this camper is 4.8 meters, with 19.5-inch aluminum rims on the wheels. The driver's cab is conventional and has a gear lever mounted right by the steering wheel.
It’s worth to pay attention how easy the access to the engine is. A double, opening door serve as ACE’s grille mockup. In order to check the oil level or replenish the liquid for the windscreen washer, you just have to open them.
All in all - Americans are pretty inventive.
