Both campers and caravans have their passionate supporters. But when making a choice, it's best to take into account not only the personal preferences ...
Camper is a house on wheels. Inside should be all you need. You can go to any place in the world you want, as long as ... the camper will fit in there.
Opposite to the living area in the camper, you can disconnect caravan from the car, leave it on the campsite, and then explore the area by car, forgetting about the heavy ballast. However, if you intend to move more frequently, disconnection and connection of the caravan and driving through the narrow streets may be a problem. So what to choose?
When caravan is better?
This depends primarily on the form of recreation that you prefer. If you are going to one particular campsite, a caravan will be more comfortable. It can stay there, because you only need a passenger car to explore the area or to go shopping. A big enthusiast of a caravans wrote once on a forum, “ It’s hard to go to the supermarket with the whole house ", and this might be necessary when traveling with a motorhome.
Other advantages are associated with that. To go to the store or to visit the area, you don’t have to pack up all your belongings, or clean up the dishes from the table. Everything can be left as it is, with no unpleasant consequences. Since you’re driving around by car, it also means less fuel consumption. And last but not least, the car will be easier to park.
Remember about the costs. Both the purchase of the caravan, as well as its maintenance is usually less expensive than in the case of a camper.
Choosing the caravan is not that easy as it seems. Travelling with a caravan is slower, and in many cases also more difficult. Besides, the popular trailers are often much worse equipped than campers. In many of them there’s a lack of containers for water and sewage, not to mention the luxury of a shower. Of course much of it depends from the price range of the caravan.
When the motorhome is better?
If you find it hard to stay in one place for a long time, a motorhome will be a better choice. If you move from place to place, pitching a caravan just to pack it for the next day and move somewhere else, would be very problematic.
Driving a camper is usually easier and faster when you drive through a good road. Besides you will easily spend the night almost anywhere - if necessary, you can sleep in the parking lot in front of the supermarket without any difficulty.
Another important advantage is associated with the possibility to join an additional trailer to a camper, for example the one for a boat. It won’t be possible when traveling with the caravan.
Problems will arise only when you decide to drive through the local roads and explore the smaller towns. Not every place is accessible for the motorhome, and driving such a vehicle in the city can sometimes be difficult.
You can solve this problem by a bicycle or scooter. Many campers have a special mini-garage, where you can put such vehicle. Then you can leave your camper at the campsite, and for a small shopping go by bike. Nonetheless, one scooter won’t be enough, if you decide to go to the city with the whole family ...
The costs may also be a problem. Because buying a camping vehicle usually isn’t cheap, and the maintenance costs are associated not only with service charges, but also with more expensive insurance, it is worth considering how many days in the year you will use such a vehicle.
While you’ll be driving the passenger car on a daily basis after detaching the caravan from it, the camper will be staying unused in the garage, waiting only for special occasions. So maybe instead of buying a camper, you could just rent it? It’s worth to consider different solutions.
