Motorhome Frankia I 840 Platinum Edition has been recognized by the British magazine "Motorhome Monthly Magazine" the best luxury motorhome of 2014. And how did it earn such name?
Frankia I 840, just like other motorhomes of this brand, has many qualities that distinguish it from the mass of camping vehicles. First of all, it has an integrated body, totally unlike to Fiat Ducato and Mercedes Sprinter, though these cars are usually the base for motorhomes.
In case of the platinum edition, the base is Mercedes with 190 HP engine combined with a 7-speed automatic transmission. But it wasn’t for the body or engine that the vehicle gain the title of Luxury Motorhome of the Year. Probably the most important argument for the jury was the fact that Frankia Platinum Edition is the car that can do without the traditionally understood 230 V network! The power on board is almost entirely provided by solar panels!
Devices powered by the sun
On the roof of the vehicle are mounted four 72-cell solar panels with a nominal power 360 Wp. In each panel, there are two modules that due to different setting eliminate problems arising from the changing insolation.
Solar energy is stored in three accumulators, and then converted to power of 230 V by an inverter that in turn has a power of 1500 W. In case the motorhome was used in conditions of low insolation (eg. in winter) you can use a fuel cell system that is integrated with the solar system, as an emergency source of power.
The vehicle in this version costs 145 thousand euro (in Germany), and standard equipment includes, among others, 22-inch flat-screen TV, satellite system and air conditioning.
Other versions equally interesting
But let's get to the ground. Platinum Edition isn’t mentioned among the options available on the website of the brand. Platinum is mainly a demonstration of technical possibilities of the company Frankia, which was supposed to draw the attention of media (as you can see – it turned out to be a success). But versions that are more ordinary are equally interesting.
Frankia I 840 in "Mercedes" version has a permissible weight of 5,3 tons. The length of the motorhome is 8580 mm, the width 2300 mm and the height - 3150 mm. Whether the car can appeal to somebody is a matter of taste, but everyone will surely appreciate a large amount of compartments accessible from the outside. They include large underfloor compartments, where you can store heavy luggage, a compartment for 2 gas cylinders, access to the containers and box for electrical devices.
Table on the rail and other surprises
Inside, a genius patent is a table that can be moved along a rail mounted in the floor. This enables us to set it in different places, depending on the necessity.
Customers will also appreciate a practical kitchen with high quality worktop in the shape of the letter L. The kitchen part is equipped very well. We can find there, among others, a hood, 4-burner stove (1 electric burner, 3 gas burners), and even an oven.
Motorhome with three rooms
Particularly noteworthy is the bathroom section located between the sleeping and living areas. In the bathroom you can “wall off” on one or two sides. Closing the door on both sides we divide the motorhome into 3 rooms.
Bathroom turns out to be quite spacious, and this impression is further emphasized by a large mirror. But this is not just a matter of subjective sense - in the toilet part there’s a place for shower cabin, which looks almost identical to the cabins mounted in homes. When you want to take a shower, you can hang your clothes on transverse tubes. You can also dry clothes there.
In the living area, there’s a drop-down bed, which during the day can be hung from the ceiling. An interesting fact - under the bed there’s a stylish, round clock. The second bed is mounted at the rear of the vehicle. It may consist of two separate sleeping places, but when you unfold central part, it turns into a big bed, which can comfortably sleep up to 3 people.
We don’t have to seek for a platinum edition, to appreciate the convenience offered by Frankia.
