For a large group of drivers of passenger cars, who are fans of caravanning, the most important element would be the safety. Without a doubt, the brand famous for its great concern about passive and active safety is Volvo. The Swedish producer has worked for several years under the tutelage of Chinese owner, which in no way affected the quality of cars produced by him. Over the past few years, Volvo's model range has greatly increased, and the most successful one is the model XC60. This compact SUV remains the most popular car in the premium segment also in Poland.
Volvo, in contrast to other-premium brands, focuses on simplicity and minimalism. Swedish designers have given the body of XC60 features typical for the brand. Huge chrome grille with the logo located vertically, as well as the lack of any ostentatious ribbing. The whole was enriched with a few chrome accents. Even in a limited edition Ocean Race, we won’t find any changes, except for a symbolic emblem. Of course the rear, as well as the front daytime running lights, were made in LED technology. And the main adaptive headlights hide bi-xenon lights.
Interior: minimalism on the first place
Volvo was about minimalism since forever, especially in the cockpit. The dashboard has successfully combined the tradition of the brand and modernity. A set of screens located behind the steering wheel displays three patterns of "analog" clocks - readable under all conditions. At the top of the center console the manufacturer installed navigation screen, that also supports air conditioning, radio and media center with Internet access. Below you can see several buttons and knobs, of course intuitive in use. Almost orthopedic (optionally trimmed with leather) front seats and rear seats also provide a high comfort of travelling and enough space. A very interesting optional addition is the electrically raised and lowered tailgate (can contain up to 495 liters).
XC60 in practice
To tow heavy caravans (and not only) the best would be a top diesel engine 2.4 D5 generating 215 HP and 420 Nm, cooperating with an automatic transmission with six gears. The five-cylinder unit guarantees excellent performance when driving without a load, allowing for rapid overtaking maneuvers. When towing a caravan (with a total weight of up to 2000 kg) we’ll appreciate the classic, smoothly working automatic gear box. Gears can be changed without any jerks. Unfortunately - extremely durable diesel engine 2.4 D5 is not a cost-effective construction. In the city, diesel consumption oscillates around 9-10 liters, out of town suddenly drops to 7.5-8 units, when towing a caravan, have to be aware of the consumption of about 10 liters for every 100 km.
XC60 D5 AWD in Ocean Race version is valued at 250 thousand PLN (55 600 EUR). Instead, we get a refined mechanics, spacious interior, and an army of driver assistance systems while driving. BLIS system constantly monitors the blind spot of the vehicle, warning us against the threat. There we have also a lane change assistant. This system warns the driver when he drives over the lines on the road without using the indicator.
