Croatian Saint Tropez - Rovinj

Rovinj, situated on the west coast of Istria, is a city famous for its picturesque location on a small hill. Everybody likes it - both wine connoisseurs and naturists. It’s Rovinj, one of the most beautiful cities in northern Croatia.

If a particular town is called by many people a Croatian Saint-Tropez, it must be unique. Rovinj competes with other resorts of the country for years, standing in the reins even with those most popular - Zagreb and Split. It owes its fame to several factors, including the taste of the wines produced in the surrounding vineyards, the atmosphere of the city beloved by artists and the most important - beautiful landscapes.

The pearl of northern Croatia

Because of the location, Rovinj enjoys considerable interest among Polish. From the southern Poland it can be reached within approx. 12 hours. So if you prepare well, you may enjoy your stay in one of the most comely Croatian towns on the same day in which you cross the borders of your own country.

In the past, the resort was a Roman settlement. You can feel the atmosphere of the Mediterranean port, and the city itself is beautifully laid out on a slight hill that is topped with a beautiful church of Saint Euphemia. You can see not only the church itself, as its 60-meter tower - twin sister of the tower of Venetian Saint Mark’s church. At the top is a rotating statue of the saint patron, made of copper. Apparently, if Saint Eufemia is looking towards the sea on a given day, the weather will be warm and sunny.

Rovinj – the atmosphere of old times

People willing to can easily get from Trg Maršala Tita, which is the marina, to the nearby islands. A fountain stands in the center of the port, while the most characteristic point is the clock tower, under which there’s a relief of St. Mark’s lion. Those, who prefer to stay on land, can take a walk along the coastal promenade or enter into a tangle of cobbled streets, running between houses with red roofs. During the day it’s relatively calm, but at night the town comes to life, filling up with tourists.

Even in the eighteenth century, the old town of Rovinj was located on the island. In 1763 it was merged with the suburb, by filling the strait with sand and ground. The only thing that survived till this day are the fragments of defensive walls and three out of seven gates. In the place of one of them there’s a baroque Balbi Triumphal Arch, decorated with the image of Venetian lion. Passing under it, we get to the street Grisija, where you can see the work of local artists, set along the stairs. There’s no other place in Rovinj, where you can feel the past like here.

During the walk it’s worth visiting the thirteenth-century Baptistery - the oldest building of the city, standing at the end of the street Karera.
