Lisard-shaped island - Norderney
You don’t have to cover thousands of kilometers to find a beautiful island, where you can spend holiday. On the North Sea there’s a small, but very picturesque island, Norderney, which belongs to Germany.
Not everyone knows where East Frisian Islands lie, and many will be surprised by the information that Germany has at least a few islands. What's more, these islands are very beautiful, although they differ from their “hot sisters” scattered around the southern seas. One of them is Norderney, belonging to Lower Saxony. It’s not too big, but offers visitors many attractions, including meadows and moorlands, as well as beautiful beaches stretching for several kilometers. The most beautiful are: Nordstrand, Oststrand and Weststrand .
To Norderney you can easily get by ferry. If anyone would like to take motorhome longer than 5 meters, he will pay about 140 euro for carriage (such amount is given by FRISIA guide). The price includes all fees and transit for 2 people in one way.
Windy island Norderney
The island is a paradise for windsurfers and kitesurfers. It’s also very popular among nature enthusiasts, who prefer long walks in the meadows and moors rather than attractions of big cities. It’s cut by many hiking trails on which you can literally lose the track of time. One of them leads through the backwaters and sand dunes, direct to the old lighthouse, which overlooks the expanse of lush green meadows. Wandering further, you reach a small wooden booth, and then you have to cover a 7 km route through the sand dunes. At the end of the trail extends Watten Sea national park, where you can meet seals.
One of the local attractions is the picturesque shipwreck graven in the sand, covered (you can even say: dotted) with colorful graffiti. Standing on the edge of the land, we can see the neighboring island of Baltrum, with amazing, big windmills.
In the past, Norderney was part of Buise - the island, which had divided into smaller islets due to erosion. Currently, it’s 2.5 km wide, 14 km long, and in the shape it resembles a lizard. Since the eighteenth century, the center of the same name located on the island is a popular SPA. Therapeutic climate and a large number of spa houses attract patients, who want to gain some strength in beautiful surroundings.
On the island is located Germany's largest thalassotherapy center - Badehaus Norderney. It offers a range of treatments based on sea water, which stimulates the cardiovascular system, improves metabolism and enables to maintain normal body temperature as well as improves the overall condition of skin and hair. 4-hour ticket for the swimming pools of the center costs 13 euros.
The town of Norderney attracts tourists with numerous boutiques, souvenir shops and a rich menu in restaurants. However, in the summer it attracts with something else – with great concerts. Throughout the season, the town hosts 2-3 concerts a day, and the real star among them (since over 30 years), is the Warsaw Philharmonic. The repertoire also includes masterpieces on request of the audience, so people can listen not only to classics, but can also hear the music from popular films.
Accommodation on the island
For such a relatively small island, Norderney offers tourists a large number of sleeping places. And not only in hotels and guesthouses – there’s also a couple of nice campsites, where you can park your motorhome. One of them is placed approximately 3.5 kilometers from the town of Norderney. It’s campingplatz "Um Ost", where adult will pay 6 euro/day. The same amount we’ll pay for the position of the vehicle, while an access to showers costs 1 euro.
Walks on the green meadows, subtle scent of moors and nutritional sea breeze – all of this is waiting for us on the island of Norderney. If you love quiet and contact with nature, you will be happy here.
