Skiing in Galibier-Thabor in France
Galibier-Thabor is a French resort especially popular among families with children. Scenic trails, the beauty of the surrounding mountains, which peak at more than 3000 m, and a great snow, guarantee perfect holidays on the slopes.
There’re several dozens of ski resorts in France, including a real pearl Galibier-Thabor - a station located on the border with Southern and Northern Alps. It owes its name to two mountains, which peak at over 3000m overlooking the picturesque towns - Valloire and Valmeinier. Together they form a large ski area adored not only by families with children. Great landscapes and excellent skiing conditions (ski runs extend on the height of 1430-2600 MASL) attracts thousands of people from different countries each year.
Ski areas Valmeinier and Valloire lie in the sunny valley of Maurienne-Tal. Valloire offers a climatic atmosphere of a small French village. There’s a historic Baroque church from the 17th century, surrounded by the local houses. Tourists can enjoy a rich tourist accommodation, which consists of family rooms, guesthouses and hotels, but also apartments in residences. Every year there’re snow and ice carving contests, which last for three days, gathering sculptors from around the world, who challenge each other.
In turn, Valmeinier attracts guests with its location in the vicinity of the Les Ecrins National Park and Vanoise National Park. A big attraction, of which the region is famous, is the narrowest pass in Alps located here.
The beauty of the slopes in Savoie
Valloire-Valmeinier area lies between the Télégraphe and Galibier Pass. By many it’s regarded as one of the most famous and most attractive ski resorts in the French Savoie region. Is popular not only because of the great winter conditions, but also because of the beauty of the landscapes and the mild climate in the Valley of Maurienne. The area is sunny, and the snow covers the slopes until the end of April. In the case of worse aura, there’re 140 snow cannons waiting in the alert.
The lovers of skiing can choose from about 150 km of ski runs, including 46 easy, 30 medium and 9 difficult. There’re 33 lifts consisting of 14 ski lifts, 17 chair lifts and two cabin lifts. Tourists can enjoy a powder snow and unique atmosphere from December to the end of April. Cross-country skiers have at their disposal 10 km of beautiful routes, while snowboarders can test their skills and shape in the snow park, on the half pipe, and on one of the routes for cross skiing (total length-25 km). The surroundings can be also admired while walking on snowshoes.
Ticket prices for Galibier-Thabor in the season 2013/2014
Diversification of the slopes ensures that in Galibier-Thabor everybody will feel good, however the region especially appeals to the families with children. They come here every year eager to schuss on the slopes with their kids. 25% of all routes are easy, including a 12-kilometer Selles, with unique beauty of the landscapes. Not only beginners can check their skills on another, equally beautiful easy run, Lutins. It starts in Valloire, stretching for approximately 3200 meters. On the other hand, only advanced skiers can enjoy the runs of the mountain La Setaz des Pres, and the black runs Cascade, Dahu and Olympique.
Appropriate selection of tickets will give us the freedom of skiing on most runs, not limiting us to certain slopes. In the upcoming season the price of one-day pass for the ski runs of Galibier-Thabor ski area will cost 36 EUR per adult. Children from 5 to 9 years old will pay 29 EUR, while seniors and youth - 32.5 EUR per day. The costs of the 7-day pass are, respectively, 198 EUR (adults), 159.5 EUR (children) and 178.5 EUR (seniors and youth).
Going with a motorhome
No one, who chooses this resort, should have problems in finding the perfect accommodation. This applies also to tourists, who come here with their own camper. They can choose, for example, Le Marintan, a campsite located in St Michel de Maurienne, about 12 km away from Valmeinier. A place for the camper, accommodation for 2 people and access to the electricity cost here 15.7 EUR/day. We can even bring our pets here, which will cost us 1 EUR/day (for a dog).
