If you are looking for a resort, where you can both go skiing, enjoy the raw beauty of nature and a peaceful atmosphere of the lakes you should definitely check the spot in the High Tatras.
The place, which biggest attraction is the lake, attracts thousands of nature enthusiasts. It's beautiful not only in winter - even on hot summer days we may come across many hikers, wandering slowly and exploring the mountain fauna and flora.
We’re speaking about the village in the High Tatras, located at the highest altitude - Štrbské Pleso. It’s situated on the southern shore of a glacial water reservoir called Lake Pleso, and tourists visiting it rave about the extremely picturesque panorama of the Low Tatras, Poprad and Liptov Basin. The resort is not only a well-known, Slovak winter sports center, but also has the status of a climatic spa. The ice covering the surface of the lake is so clear that in the past it was reportedly transported even to Budapest and Berlin.
To get to the Lake Pleso, it’s best to cross the border in Lysa Polana-Tatranská Javorina. Then, via road No. 67, we reach the Tatra Basin, and next, following the road No. 537, through Starý Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica, we get to the resort. It’s about 21 km away from Zakopane, a great Polish ski resort. A definitely huge advantage of the village are extensive parking facilities - both paid and free.
Štrbské Pleso – small is beautiful
Štrbské Pleso is a relatively small resort, it doesn’t have hundreds of ski slopes either. You can even say that its offer is pretty modest. However, it successfully makes up for it with the beautiful area, clean air, and many tourist attractions. Here are located two ski jumps (K-90 and K-120, where you can try bungee jumping as well), and visitors can enjoy the tracks for downhill and slalom. There’s also a winter stadium at their disposal.
While staying at the resort, you can do some extreme sports as well, such as paragliding. You can use the opportunity and try ice-skating on the Lake Štrbské, take part in a sleigh ride and try the so-called skiring, which is skiing while being pulled by a galloping horse. One of the local attractions is the fun park, where people are encouraged to try attractions such as snow tubing, snow rafting and bungee running.
Skiing adherents have the opportunity to schuss on six slopes. Their total length amounts 7.36 km. All trails are artificially snowed, and operated by five lifts (3 cable cars and 4 chairlifts). The resort also has a special lift for children. The slopes are designed for intermediate skiers, but only one of them is really aimed at people who are just learning to ski – it’s a ski run number 6.
Ticket prices in the season 2013/2014
People, who came to the resort to check the local ski runs, can use all lifts of the Lake Štrbské after purchasing one ticket. The ski season starts on 7th December 2013 and ends on 21st April 2014 year. In high season, a 1-day pass for an adult skier costs 35 EUR, for children - 25 EUR, while for youth and seniors 28 EUR. In turn, a 6-day pass costs 186 EUR for an adult, 130 EUR for a child, and 149 EUR for youth and seniors.
The resort offers ski and snowboard rentals, ski-service and ski schools for beginners. But what else you can do apart from skiing? In the region you can do alpine skiing, besides the resort provides 18 km of perfectly groomed trails for cross country skiing. If you have more time and want to explore the area, you can go to the water park Tatralandia, located in Liptovsky Mikulas, or to Poprad, where the guests can enjoy the whole water complex AquaCity.
Under the Slovak peaks
Štrbské Pleso is undoubltedly an exceptionally beautiful place. Regardless of whether you visit it with the intention of skiing, exploring the area, or simply relax in the shade of majestic mountain peaks, you will be really satisfied with the stay in this charming resort. You can stay in a hotel, one of the many cozy guesthouses or at a campsite.
In a distance of about 8 km from the center of Štrbské Pleso, you can find Autocamping Tatranská
Štrba. The price of the accommodation is 4 EUR per adult and 2 EUR per night for a child. The cost of the position of the vehicle amounts 2.5 EUR per day, while the access to electricity - 3.30 EUR a day. You can also bring your pets here – it would cost 1,5 EUR/day. The major advantages of the campsite include a playground and a traditional, Slovak restaurant.
Holidays in this resort will allow us to recharge the batteries and rest decently. It’s quite possible, that longing for this amazing place will force us to visit it in summer, and get to know it from a totally different angle.
