Tux Tux Hintertux
Under this exotic-sounding name there’s hidden a glacier, advertised as the only one year-round ski area in Austria. Hintertux is a well-known resort and a part of a big, 50 km long, Zillertall Valley. You can get to the top by a cable car, and after reaching the highest point available by a lift, you will be delighted by the sight of panorama extending from the terrace situated at an altitude of 3250 meters above sea level. To say that the place is worth coming is not enough – we should rather focus on a fact that Hintertux received the title of "Best ski area in the world of 2011." The award was granted by the portal Skiresort.de, one of the biggest portals checking the ski regions. In the category "Best ski resort" Hintertux received 4.2 out of 5 stars, which is a great achievement.
There are perfectly prepared slopes waiting for the enthusiasts of winter sports. Skiers have at their disposal over 86 kilometers of pistes of all difficulty levels (23 km of easy ones, 47 km of medium-difficult and 16 km of hard) and 22 lifts, of which 18 are currently open. The highest mountain lifts reach the points located at an altitude of 3250 meters above sea level. Additionally, the resort offers 68 km of hiking trails and 28 km of ski trails, three ski schools and five shelters. Cable cars Gletscherbus 1 and Hintertux help tourists to get to the hall Sommerbergalm, from the extra facilities we can also mention free ski buses and night bus called Nightliner.
In the season of 2012/2013 ski pass prices (from December 13th to May 10th) oscillate around 45 € for adult for one day of skiing, weekly ski pass costs 244 €, and two weeks ski pass - 420 €. A 5 day-ski pass for a child costs, for instance, 84 €.
Speaking of prices, we cannot forget about the costs of accommodation. And specifically about the costs of accommodation on campsites - after all, according to the "Camping, Cars & Caravans" (magazine for fans of caravanning) and the aforementioned portal Skiresort.de, Zillertal is the best area for campers.
Camping Mayrhofen (Laubichl 125, Mayrhofen), is the closest to Hintertux, and you can come here with your dog. Approximate prices of accommodation are: 7,50-8,50 € per day for an adult, 5,20-5,70 € per day for a child under the age of 14, and a dog costs- 3 € per day. We will pay more during the period from 10.12 to 06.01, but later (07.01-14.04) the prices will be already lower. If you pay in cash, you will receive a 2% discount, and another nice reduction if we stay longer than 15 days – then it’s 10%. The price includes access to the hot showers, swimming pool, wastes disposal. Ski bus transfer is also included in the price. Every 20 minutes the ski busses are taking the skiers to the slopes. If you want to come during Christmas or New Year's it is necessary to book a place in advance.
A little bit further is Campingdorf Hofer (Gerlosstraße 33, Zell am Ziller), a campsite opened from mid-October to late April. The accommodation price for one person is 7,70-8,60 € per day, depending on the month. A place for the vehicle costs 8,50-9,50 € per day, and for a dog, regardless of the season, you pay 2.50 € per day. There’s a good Internet connection at the campsite, we can also enjoy the swimming pool and, of course, a free ski bus.
It is also worth to check other place - Camping Hochzillertal (6272 Kaltenbach / Tyrol). It is located in the middle of the valley, so those who chose it, have a really great selection of the nearby ski resorts. It is only 300 meters from the nearest Zillertall. Thanks to the free buses which stop right by the campsite, the other slopes are also easily accessible for those who want to practice skiing. Prices are as follows: a place for the camper and the stay of an adult from the beginning of November you pay 6 € per day, for children up to 14 years - 4.20 € per day, and for the pet - 3 € per day.
Apart from skiing, the Hintertux region attracts tourists with a large number of therapeutic springs. They are the highest located springs in Europe and every year a hundreds of vacationers come here because of them. On the other hand, next to the hostel Spannagelhaus, there’s something attractive for caving enthusiasts – the Spannagel cave (Spannagelhöhle). It is the largest natural cave in the Central Alps, it’s about 10 kilometers long and can be visited with a guide. Additionally, the resort offers visitors two amusement parks: Familypark Hintertux and besieged by snowboarders and freestyle enthusiasts Betterpark Hintertux. It’s opened from October as the first open Snowpark in Austria and also at the same time is the host of the first Snowpark-Opening of Europe. It’s an event, which cannot be missed by the fans of freestyle and boards.
Moreover, the resort doesn’t lack in good restaurants, discos or pubs. After such a trip, a lot of us will probably hear the lively song sang by Helmut from Mallorca “Tux tux Hintertux” for a long time in our heads.
