The winter season in the High Tatras has already begun, but the biggest events are still to come. What’s waiting for skiing enthusiasts this year? New snowed slopes, increased safety on the slopes, and a series of events ideal for snow enthusiasts.
This year, fans of skiing in the High Tatras can enjoy several attractions. There’re prepared in three Slovak centers that advertise as the best ski resorts of the region, namely in Stary Smokovec, Tatranska Lomnica and Pleso Lake.
In the Old Smokovec guests can enjoy easy routes, ideal for beginners and less advanced skiers, toboggan run which is open around the clock, and a funicular railway to Hrebienok. This year we will be able to go ice-skating at the Grandhotel in Stary Smokovec.
Tatranska Lomnica - new cableway
The biggest changes have occurred in Tatranska Lomnica. Here we have a new cable car, namely the 15-seater gondola, the same as in the resort of Chopok Juh. It’ll take skiers from the Štart station to Skalnaté.
The original route Esíčka Skalnaté – Čučoriedky was renewed, moreover, a new blue slope Buková Hora II was created as an alternative to the steep sections. Ski runs Buková Hora II and Esíčka are covered with artificial snow (Esíčka was additionally equipped with barriers).
To meet the expectations of tourists, also restaurant Skalnaté Pleso was renovated.
New offer of Pleso center
Changes in the second center were slightly smaller, but clearly noticeable - especially for families with children. Children ski school was moved to a different location (more favourable).
The resort Pleso also extended its offer of the ski routes. Another ski slope was created - Modrá, also artificially snowed.
High Tatras in winter
In both ski resorts the improvement of safety on the slopes and the adaptation of the offer to the growing requirements of the customers where of the biggest importance. The offer now includes new routes, thus is more favorable for beginners. With the new gondola the capacity increased from 900 to 2400 people per hour. After the renovation of the restaurant the number of places for tourists has grown from 90 to 250. There’s also a terrace, allowing tourists to enjoy beautiful views while eating.
Winter holidays in the High Tatras is a guarantee of great fun and active leisure. Skiers can count on snow for five months of the year, and events like Bikini skiing, Dog sledding, Sony Xperia Snowboard Fest and a wide range of après-ski.
